The Practical Site MAIL ORDER PLANTS: When you receive your plants by mail order take them out of the plastic bag and soak the herbs for an hour in water. Please note: I only sell plants as a special when I have plenty and the weather conditions are right for mail order. In the meantime prepare a Styrofoam boxes (broccoli boxes from the greengrocer) or any suitable container. Water wells (this is a pot with a water reservoir) are ideal. Cut wholes in the bottom, fill with a good potting mix (garden soil mixed with compost, or a good bought potting mix). Add a good organic fertiliser plant all plants in each box, covering the tap roots and laterals, water in well. Use a good organic fertiliser and fertilise during spring - autumn every 3 weeks. It will give you plenty of lush green healthy leaves to eat. For my personal use I planted pennywort in a 410 mm water well, which is placed under a tap. It gets 3 hours morning sun and plenty of light. It is thriving, some of the leaves are 35mm in diameter. Keep the plants well watered, but not waterlogged. Styrofoam boxes insulate and keep the soil warmer in winter and cooler in summer. If you live in the cooler states i.e. Victoria, South of Sydney, Tasmania move the boxes to a warm sheltered position in winter. Pennywort is not making much growth during the colder months, but that is usually the time when arthritis plays up most. If you live in the warmer states, there is no problem. Pennywort will grow in full sun, but the leaves are smaller and the taste is bitter. But it will thrive in morning or better still, filtered sun (in summer). You will get leaves the size of an Australian 50 cents coin. An Australian 50 cents coin is approximately 30 mm in diameter.
